Preserving and Protecting the Unique Biodiversity Around Simandou

Deep within the Simandou Mountains, in one of Guinea’s most biodiverse and forested regions, Denise Molmou has been working on the ground for over a decade to study, protect, and preserve the region’s ecosystems, helping to leave a sustainable environmental legacy.

A specialist in flora and biodiversity, Denise takes a conservation approach grounded in rigor, careful observation, and solid field experience.

Understanding to better protect

Denise’s work goes far beyond species identification. It is part of a comprehensive scientific effort aimed at better understanding ecosystems to ensure their protection.

Over the years, she has contributed to the collection of essential botanical data, the monitoring of endemic and rare species, and the development of solid scientific foundations to guide the project’s environmental decisions.

This expertise has helped strengthen the management of natural habitats and support programs for the gradual rehabilitation of impacted areas.

Discoveries that Advance Science

Among Denise’s major contributions are the discovery and description of new plant species for science. Two of them now bear her name: Keita deniseae, a species endemic to the Forest Guinea region around Simandou, and Saxicolella deniseae.

These discoveries are the result of several years of field research, scientific analysis, and collaboration with recognized institutions. They demonstrate the importance of the Simandou project in advancing knowledge of tropical biodiversity.

Conservation Guided by Science and Collaboration

Conservation at Simandou is based on a rigorous scientific approach.

The data collected is used to test and refine conservation and restoration methods, while ensuring the preservation of species’ genetic diversity. This approach guarantees that the actions implemented today contribute to the long-term resilience of ecosystems.

Passing on Knowledge and Inspiring Future Generations

Beyond her scientific role, Denise places great importance on sharing knowledge. Her career inspires young scientists, particularly women, to pursue careers in research, the environment, and biodiversity.

Her recent completion of a Ph.D. in biological sciences marks a key milestone in her academic journey. It strengthens the link between fieldwork, scientific research, and the education of future generations.

A leader in responsible conservation

Earlier in April, SimFer hosted Denise’s colleagues, family and friends in Conakry to celebrate her achievements and help inspire the future generations of scientists and researchers. She inspires deep pride in her colleagues and is a model of an emerging generation of Guinean leaders focused on balancing responsible mining and biodiversity conservation. Thanks to people like Denise, by drawing on science, long-term commitment, and local expertise, Simandou can help protect unique natural heritage.

“Simandou’s biodiversity is a precious legacy. Protecting it today means ensuring a sustainable future for tomorrow.”
