In Moribadou, a training programme launched two years ago with the support of Rio Tinto SimFer has changed the trajectory of 30 young women, who are now professional seamstresses and have organized into a cooperative.
Participants in the programme developed strong technical skills in both modern and traditional sewing, including the use of professional equipment, finishing techniques, as well as workshop management and organisation.
Beyond learning a trade, the objective was clear: to enable these women to become independent, employable, and able to generate their own income.

Today, the participants are fully qualified and able to put their skills to work in the local market. The initiative has strengthened their employability and opened up sustainable economic opportunities.
The most significant impact, however, lies in the personal transformation of these women, who have gained in confidence, autonomy, and the ability to plan for their future.
At the end of the programme, participants decided to establish the Moribadou Professional Seamstresses’ Cooperative. This structure enables them to pool their skills, access economic opportunities more easily, and strengthen their collective agency. It provides a sustainable model for economic empowerment.

Kadiatou Keita, now president of the cooperative, stated: “Before, I had neither a profession nor hope. Today, I am a professional seamstress. We no longer depend on others — we are building our future with our own hands.”

Mariame Kaba, also a member of the cooperative, shares the same experience: “This training gave me much more than a profession — it restored my confidence and dignity. Today, I can support my family and plan my future with hope.”

Beyond individual outcomes, the programme contributes to women’s economic empowerment, reduces inequalities, and strengthens the local economy.
Through this initiative, Rio Tinto SimFer reaffirms its commitment to investing in local skills, supporting job creation, and helping communities achieve sustainable and balanced development.
