Conakry, Republic of Guinea – SimFer, the joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Guinea, Rio Tinto and the CIOH consortium led by Chinalco, celebrated World Environment Day with coordinated site activities focused on waste management, environmental awareness and reforestation.

Across our scope – from mine to rail to port – our people participated in environmental toolbox talks followed by tree planting events and coordinated clean-up activities across sites and work areas, with teams collecting and sorting waste in line with established safety procedures. While good housekeeping is an essential part of routine site management, this initiative brought teams together in a coordinated effort across all areas.

The tree planting coincides with the wet season and the beginning of the annual rehabilitation program across the project area, with over 90,000 seedlings of local plant species in production at the on-site nursery and in large community nurseries managed by local NGOs. This activity builds on ongoing efforts to manage land disturbance and prioritise rehabilitation in project areas.

Therese Dower, General Manager HSE for SimFer, stated: “World Environment Day is a moment to turn awareness into action. Across our sites, teams came together to take practical steps which, when done consistently, strengthen how we protect and restore the environment.”
These activities form part of SimFer’s broader approach to reducing impacts while contributing to the ecological restoration of disturbed areas across the project scope.
